McDonald’s fans stunned at how much a burger and fries cost you 10 years ago compared to now

The average price of burgers, fries and drinks at McDonald’s has doubled in just a decade, but some items have risen even more.

For example, a recent report from DailyMail.com showed how McChicken went from $1 to $2.99 and a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal went from $5.30 to $11.99.

Now, fans (or former fans) of America’s largest fast food chain have given their verdict on Reddit after a user posted the price changes.

One person joked in response: “Would you say menu prices have collectively doubled?”

And one Redditor was blunt: ‘It’s a dumb move – they only have market share by being cheap fast food. With higher prices, people will go elsewhere for better quality.’

Over the past decade, the average cost of an assortment of typical menu items at McDonald’s has doubled. The photo shows the items that have increased in price the most

One of them pointed out an item that was missing from the survey and that they believed had increased the most.

“How dare they leave out the most egregious price increase: hash browns! I think they cost $0.89 each in 2014 and are now $3.19 each.” wrote one person.

Someone replied: “$3.19 for a potato wedge is ridiculous. They are literally fried potatoes.”

WeirdAvocado said, “Spend a little more and go to non-chain burger joints. The quality of everything is much better.’

Some supported the popular West Coast chain In-N-Out, which is known for using fresh burgers and real potatoes for its fries – and paying its staff well.

“It’s cheaper to get a double cheeseburger meal at inn’out (where many more employees work) than it is to get a quarter pounder meal with kiosks everywhere… it’s not even real food.” so processed,” Icetelee wrote.

AlarmingSpend988 suggested that customers vote with their wallets, writing: ‘Everyone’s complaining, but not enough of you are avoiding McDonald’s. Of course they’re going to raise prices.’

RageSquid12 joked that McDonald’s had raised prices to compensate for declining sales: “Sir, people aren’t going to our locations anymore! Our turnover has fallen by almost 4%!’

‘Fast! Increase menu prices again to compensate!’

Snidgrogen said they believed that while prices had increased, quality had decreased.

“Interesting considering their quality control has dropped 100% over the same period,” they wrote.

Customers were not only fed up with prices and quality, but also complained about the speed of service.

SnootcherGoobers wrote: ‘Top it off with longer wait times. It used to be okay because the food was cheap and you could get through the ride pretty quickly.

‘Price and speed compensated for the quality. Now I could just as easily go to a restaurant for almost the same cost and time, with the benefit of better food. We rarely go there now.’

Both Chilli’s and Applebee’s recently launched deals on $10 burger meals, which they call larger and served by wait staff.

Portions that seemed smaller at McDonald’s were also a complaint.

“Everything goes up and its weight goes down…greed,” wrote HalfBakedMason.

Another blasted: “PROFIT FLATION! with goddamn covid as a cover.”

McDonald’s prices have come under scrutiny after bosses admitted the company had lost customers put off by price rises over the past two years.

But new research from FinanceBuzz shows the magnitude of price increases over a ten-year period. In that time, the average cost of a selection of key menu items has doubled. Some items cost three times as much.

That’s more than three times the official inflation rate; according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of goods has increased 31 percent since 2014.

Then a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal and an Oreo McFlurry would cost you less than $8. Now that combination would cost more than double, at about $16.50.

In the rest of the US economy, $8 in 2014 would now be worth about $10.50.

Some menu items have become more expensive more quickly — a McChicken cost just a dollar in 2014 but is now three times as expensive.

Medium fries have more than doubled in price, from $1.59 to $3.79 this year. A McDouble cost $1.19 then, but now it costs $3.19.

Other items are less vulnerable to price increases. The cost of a medium drink rose less than inflation: ten years ago it was $1.29, but still only $1.61.

It comes as photos of high prices at some McDonald’s restaurants have gone viral, including a single Egg McMuffin for $7.29 and a Big Mac for $8.39.

Neil Saunders, director of consultancy GlobalData Retail, told DailyMail.com this year that consumers are getting fed up with price increases.

“The problem is that places like McDonald’s were once cheap treats but are now becoming expensive luxuries. And customers are fed up with constant price increases,” he said.

McDonald’s questioned some of the prices in FinanceBuzz’s report, adding: ‘Value is part of McDonald’s DNA, and we want to deliver great value to our customers through everyday affordable prices plus special offers and deals in our app and through the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program.”
