Netflix is about to add the best horror movie of the year

Netflix is about to add one of the year’s best horror films to its roster as one of the October additions to the platform.

Talk To Me, directed by debuting twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, will be released on October 26.

Despite first being shown in 2022 at the Adelaide Film Festival, its theatrical release was highly anticipated as bidders fought for the right to distribute the film, leading to its worldwide debut on July 28.

Since then, production A24 has achieved a 95 percent score on the review aggregator Rotten tomatoes and grossed $72.4 million at the box office on a budget of just $4.5 million.

The film’s success also led to a sequel being teased within weeks of its summer release.

Talk To Me follows Adelaide teenager Mia (Sophie Wilde), her best friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen) and her younger brother Riley (Joe Bird).

The trio attend a party where guests invite dead spirits into their bodies using a severed, embalmed hand.

They then use the phrase “Talk to me” before saying “I’ll let you in” to be completely taken over by a ghost.

The production impressed at last year’s Adelaide Film Festival, and again at the Sundance, Berlin International and Fantasia International festivals that followed.

Ultimately, the rights to distribute the film were secured in a seven-figure deal Varietygiving directors Danny and Michael ‘a dream come true’ experience.

They were further pleased with the news that they would get the chance to make a sequel – announced on August 8 – which will be released soon.

“We’re ready for round 2!” Danny commented. “Thanks @a24 for giving this to us!”

Michael wrote: ‘The world isn’t ready yet!’

Perhaps helpful to the couple, A24 is one of the few independent film studios to recently receive a SAG-AFTRA waiver.

They were cleared to begin production on Alex Scharfman’s horror comedy Death of a Unicorn starring Jenna Ortega and David Lowery’s musical drama Mother Mary starring Anne Hathaway, despite the ongoing acting union strike.

It helps that A24 is not part of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, so is not tied to companies associated with the organization – according to Variety.
