Celtic fans interrupted the minute’s applause in memory of the Queen before their match against St Mirren on Sunday by singing anti-royal chants.

The Scottish FA had left it up to individual clubs to decide whether to pay tribute to the Queen this weekend after her death earlier this month.

At most matches in the UK, fans and players observed a minute’s silence and sang the national anthem before kick-off, but this time there was a minute of applause.

But above the applause from the Celtic side, chants rang out as fans chanted, “If you hate the Royal Family, clap your hands.”

Supporters also held up a banner with the same message, while cheers were heard before the minute of applause had started.

The Celtic players and manager Ange Postecoglou continued to applaud for the entire minute before the referee blew his whistle to signal 60 seconds had passed.

After the applause, the national anthem was not played as the match started shortly afterwards.

The response from Celtic fans comes just four days after they also expressed their dismay at the monarchy during the Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fans held a banner in the stands that read ‘f*** the crown’, while another message read ‘sorry for your loss Michael Fagan’.

Fagan managed to climb the walls of Buckingham Palace before crawling into Her Majesty’s bedroom in 1982 while she was asleep.

The painter and decorator at the time, who has schizophrenia, talked about his family with the monarch for about 10 minutes.

The late monarch thought Fagan was just a drunken servant, who was eventually tackled by a footman on duty.

Celtic supporters aren’t the only fans to have disrupted the Queen’s tribute this weekend.

Dundee United fans chanted ‘Lizzie’s in a box’ ahead of their game with Rangers on Saturday, sparking outrage from the home crowd in Ibrox.
