Shocking racist slur against footy player goes viral – as investigation is launched

An investigation has been launched after a spectator hurled a racial slur at a rugby league player in NSW during a match between Thirlmere and Campbelltown Collegians.

A Collegians player of Polynesian descent is said to have been the victim of the alleged abuse during the match streamed live on YouTube following the team’s win at Thirlmere Sports Ground.

A female voice is heard in the crowd shouting, “Go back to your boat,” among several other profanities.

The Thirlmere club confirmed via Facebook that an investigation into the incident has been launched, ‘with the assistance of the NSWRL’.

“The club strongly opposes and denounces any form of racist comments or comments that disparage any individual or culture, both on and off the pitch, and will take serious action in the coming days.

‘We support fair and equal sportsmanship and always will. We do not condone or condone this type of behavior from any individual or group that is contrary to our club and Group 6 values.

“The Club can assure that this matter is being seriously investigated and action is being taken, with the assistance of NSWRL.”

The video clip was shared on Facebook and has been viewed 250,000 times, with shocked fans expressing their disbelief at the comment.

A NSWRL spokesperson said: ‘The NSWRL is investigating an alleged defamation incident involving spectators at a Macarthur Premiership match between Thirlmere Roosters and Campbelltown Collegians on Sunday 28 April.

“Both clubs are assisting the NSWRL with its investigations. The NSWRL and the clubs involved will not tolerate any form of defamation.

“No further comment will be made until the investigation is complete.”
