Wayne Rooney joins The Overlap and will link up with ex-Man United team-mates Gary Neville on Roy Keane as he takes next step in career following sacking from Birmingham

Wayne Rooney has found a new team. Kind of.

The Manchester United and England hero joins The Overlap.

Rooney, 38, will star in the channel’s range of YouTube and podcast content alongside Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher.

Launched by Neville in 2021, The Overlap has become one of the most agenda-setting voices in football, with big-name exclusives and all the big talking points every week.

“I’m delighted to announce that I will be appearing on the channel with my good friend Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap in some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast,” Rooney wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘I can’t wait to get started.’

Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano even filmed a video announcing the signing, claiming Rooney will debut with The Overlap ‘very soon’.

As well as interviews, the channel publishes a variety of shows including The Breakdown, Fan Debate and Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet.

Rooney is looking for new challenges after being sacked by Birmingham City in January.

His burgeoning managerial career also became a hit in the Midlands when he took over from John Eustace with the club in sixth place, leaving them in twentieth.

He won just two of the fifteen games he was in charge and they now find themselves in the relegation zone going into the final game of the season.

It’s clear the United and England legend is keen to return to the dugout, but before he does, Rooney has embarked on a number of ventures.

Firstly, the 38-year-old has been a pundit for several broadcasters in recent months, including Sky Sports, TNT Sports and BBC One.

He is associated with cruel humiliations during his duties as an expert.

In his recent appearance on Sky Sports, Rooney told Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool to ‘carry on’ after their Merseyside derby defeat.

“Those Liverpool players should want to go tomorrow because when you lose a derby match you want the games to come quickly,” he said.

‘We’ve heard it so many times this season at Liverpool’s kick-off, around 12.30pm. Keep going, that’s part of your job. They have to be ready to play.”

Similarly, while serving as a pundit for United’s win over Everton in March, he claimed he had no sympathy for Marcus Rashford’s struggles in the 2023-2024 season.

Rooney told TNT Sports: “Not much, to be honest. He is in a privileged position playing for Man United.

‘He is the only player who I think can reach my goalscoring record. I hope he does, but he needs to achieve consistency. He’s not having the best seasons, so he needs to find form and become a leader.”

This month, Rooney was announced as the latest star signing for EA Sports FC Pro Club Girth N Turf, founded by YouTubers Angry Ginge and Yung Filly.

Rooney made his debut for the club, but it wasn’t his playing skills that stood out – or perhaps even stood out – during the livestream.

After playing, Rooney stated that he wanted to play again in the future, saying: ‘If that’s you [sic] wants us back. I will return.’ Yung Filly immediately answered yes.

However, the 38-year-old was soon teased by Angry Ginge – real name Morgan Burtwistle – who declared: ‘You can come back tomorrow, mate. Stop being so stupid.’

This caused Rooney himself to respond with a light-hearted jab as he hit back with: ‘Ah, you ginger ****!’.

Just a week later, Rooney caused his teammates to erupt in laughter again after quickly responding to a foul-mouthed comment from the livestream chat.

“For some reason I apparently just get called ‘you’re a fat granny ******’, cheers mate,” Angry Ginge said. ‘Someone is clearly not too happy that Real Madrid won.’

Rooney was quick to respond, with the 38-year-old making the deadpan comment: “I don’t think this was aimed at you.”

He has also refused to rule out taking part in KSI’s Misfits Boxing promotion after claiming ‘a few’ people had reached out to try to get him in the ring.
