New York City tennis enthusiasts: Your wallet may be spared.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is offering $100 tickets for the US Open at a fraction of the market value. One thousand lucky residents will receive $100 entry into the tournament, including main event matches from August 30 through September 8. Tickets include seats at Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadiums, as well as grounds passes.
Tickets will go on sale online begins at 10 a.m. EST on Wednesday, August 26, on a first-come, first-served basis. Buyers must have a zip code within the five boroughs. The lucky winners can buy a ticket for themselves and a friend, the mayor said.
The face value for grounds pass tickets this year is $65. But starting Tuesday, entry into tournaments will cost between $240 and almost $500 on resale platforms like Ticketmaster.
The US Tennis Association is working with the Mayor’s Office on this offering.
“Part of the beauty of living in our city is also being exposed to some of the biggest sporting events in the world,” the mayor said at a news conference on Tuesday. “Yet, as we have seen at many sporting events, costs have continued to rise, and many New Yorkers feel like they don’t have a chance to be part of something like this.”
Mamdani created lotteries and cheaper sports tickets are features of its affordability strategy this summer. He offered New Yorkers a chance to land Discounted World Cup ticketsKnicks-themed trash cans and front row seats for the 4th of July fireworks. Starting this fall, high school students will also be eligible for cheap admission to Broadway shows.
The US Open, America’s premier tennis tournament and one of the largest in the world, has a reputation for greatness. Visitors spend hundreds of dollars on chicken nuggets with caviar, merchandise and the beloved Honey-Deuce cocktail. It is partly a sports tournament, share public fashion showand some opportunity to impress your Wall Street friends with access to an exclusive viewing box.
It’s almost certain that these $100 US Open tickets will go quickly. When Mamdani announced affordable, limited edition World Cup jerseys worth $50 in June, New Yorkers played hooky from work and waited in line for hours for the chance to wear one. However, some jerseys sold for as much as $1,000 on resale websites the next day.
