MAFS: Jesse ‘upset’ when wife Claire asked if he was autistic

Quirky Married At First Sight star Jesse Burford was left “upset” when his wife Claire Nomarhas asked if he had autism.

The conversation took place during the newlyweds’ turbulent honeymoon in the Whitsundays, but did not make it to air.

Kindergarten teacher Claire asked her husband if he was on the spectrum after they started arguing over seemingly minor things, like his interest in astrology.

But the question fell through and Jesse, 30, was “quite upset” by the suggestion that he had an undiagnosed developmental disability, a source told Daily Mail Australia.

A friend of Jesse’s confirmed Thursday that he has not been diagnosed with autism, adding that he doesn’t think he meets the criteria for the disorder.

It comes after a heated debate started on Reddit this week when a user familiar with the condition said that Jesse exhibited various symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, and that he was “poor thing” that the producers portrayed him so negatively on screen.

In the comments, viewers even said that the show’s way of editing him as a “villain” was unfair in light of the possibility that his behavior isn’t entirely his fault.

“Look, as someone who has quite a bit of experience with people on the spectrum for the job, I’m willing to put up a lot of cash that Jesse [has] high-functioning autism,” wrote one Reddit user.

“If this is the case, I actually think it’s pretty bad of the producers to have him and portray him in such a negative light.”

“I’m not taking away some of the terrible things he said, but I don’t know, I just think the guy probably isn’t getting the help he needs and shouldn’t be on TV as this villain.” .’

One said it was “painful” to see Jesse “go back into his shell” at the explosive first dinner, which is how many autistic people react to confrontation.

“The awkward reactions, the socially inappropriate comments with awkwardness written in full expression. Losing his voice and freezing when pressed. The inability to communicate socially.

A similar comment read: ‘As someone who has autism, I never saw Jesse as part of the spectrum. When other people started bringing it up, I recognize some autistic traits in his behavior. Either way, I think his problems are probably caused by trauma from past relationships.
