How a boy’s offer of one dollar to a ‘homeless man’ sparked an incredible friendship

A boy from Louisiana offered money to a man he thought was homeless on the streets, who turned out to be a multi-millionaire.

On Good Friday, Baton Rouge resident Matt woke up to the sound of a fire alarm and ran out of his apartment, dressed in whatever he could find in his room.

While he waited for the commotion to subside, Matt went across the street for a cup of coffee to start his day.

After getting his coffee, Matt decided to wait outside and make time for a morning prayer. He chose a corner of the patio, closed his eyes, crossed his arms and began to meditate.

That’s when a young boy named Kelvin saw Matt standing in the corner and assumed he was homeless.

Kelvin told the local news station WBRZ that he always wanted to help a homeless person, so he walked straight up to Matt and offered him some money.

“I said, ‘Excuse me, sir, are you homeless? Because if you are, here’s a dollar,'” Kelvin said.

Matt responded with emotion: ‘No, I’m not actually homeless. I actually live across the street in this apartment.”

β€œHe was confused, he didn’t really know what to do. However, he does not accept the dollar. I’m not mad about it,” Kelvin said.

As a thank you for his kindness, Matt offered to buy Kelvin and his father breakfast. Kelvin said he got a cookie, a sunny side up egg and some cheese, while his dad got coffee.

Kelvin has always wanted to give back to those less fortunate, but never had any money with him.

β€œI had money, it wasn’t that much, but it still helped him a little,” Kelvin said.

WBRZ arranged Matt and Kelvin’s second meeting. Sylvia Weatherspoon, a reporter at the local station, informed Kelvin that Matt was actually far from homeless.

‘Are you on Google? Are you that famous?’ Kelvin asked Matt, incredibly shocked.

Matt was the first millionaire Kelvin had ever met.

β€œIf you’re the first millionaire I meet, you can lend me a few dollars, right?” Kelvin joked.

Matt lent him more than a few dollars. He brought Kelvin a bunch of merchandise from his store and offered him 40 seconds of shopping with nothing off limits.

For example, Kelvin brought home a brand new bicycle worth $2,000.

β€œYou gave me the only money in your pocket thinking I was a homeless man, and that speaks volumes about your character,” he said.

β€œThis generation that’s coming, if they’re more like Kelvin… they’ll give. They will be filled with joy, they will be happy, they will change the community, change the parish, change the state, change the world.”

Matt turned to Kelvin, β€œYou have that power, you can do that.”
