I’m an American man living in the UK… here are THREE things I find weird about your country

An American man living in Britain has revealed three aspects of British culture that have left him baffled.

Kobie Jordan, who lives in London, regularly delves into cultural differences, both through street interviews with British people and by sharing his own experiences.

In a video uploaded in June 2023 as part of his ‘Weird things about the UK’ series on TikTok, the content creator shared his observations.

Jordan, who goes by @kjordyyy, highlights three things he finds ‘weird’ in Britain

First he discusses the common greeting “Are you okay?” – which he admits he initially mistook for passive aggression.

American Kobie Jordan, who lives in Britain, reveals aspects of British culture that have baffled him – including university students ‘grabbing a pint’ with their teachers after lectures

He said: ‘When I first moved here I thought it was just British people being passive-aggressive and saying, ‘You’re fine’, after I’d just had a bad day. Of course I’m not doing well.’

Secondly, Jordan also claimed that British people walk more than their transatlantic cousins.

According to the content creator, Americans drive or take distances of more than ten minutes on public transportation.

He explained: ‘We’re done filming and I say, “Let’s get something to eat somewhere,” and they say, “Oh, it’s only 35 minutes away.” 35 minutes drive? At home, if it lasts more than 10 minutes, you’re whipping [driving].’

The most startling revelation to the American, however, concerned university culture.

Jordan pointed out how surprising it was to find bars or pubs on many British university campuses.

He said, β€œThey have bars and clubs on their campus. And, even stranger than that, the teacher will literally say, β€œAll of you [you all] Would you like a beer after class?”

Jordan concludes his observations by claiming that drinking has become normalized among British students because the legal drinking age is 18 – with many drinking before – compared to 21 in the US.

He claimed that British people “have been drinking since they were 15 years old, so by the time they go to college it’s not for them,” while Americans “go crazy and start acting crazy” at university because of national drinking age. 21.

A number of Brits hilariously confirmed Jordan’s observations in the comments, with one writing: ‘As a Brit who has moved abroad I miss walking everywhere,’ while another said: ‘Drinking for 15? In which part of Britain? We start from birth haha.’

Meanwhile, someone commented: ‘Don’t you say ‘what’s up’ as a greeting? Isn’t that pretty much the same as ‘everything’s fine?’
