Andy Burnham faces renewed pressure to make a call general elections after a Labor grandfather said he should go to the country before next summer.
Former Minister of the Interior Alan Johnson said the new Prime Minister must prove his new policies are popular and represent a break from the Starmer era by voting in 2027.
While Mr Burnham ran for the Labor leadership on a platform for major policy changes, his chancellor John Healey said last week that his new government was the “continuity of a Labor government” with a different leader.
Speaking to Times Radio, Mr Johnson, who was a Cabinet minister, said Tony Blair and said alongside Mr Burnham under Gordon Brown: ‘He (Burnham) can’t really last, I think, the whole Starmer term… until 2029.
“He should think about going to the country sooner and getting his own mandate.”
He added that it did not have to happen immediately, and admitted Labor MPs were listening.will shout at me that the last thing they want is a general election.’
But he said it was crucial to “restore confidence in politics” and cited Mr Brown’s failure to call an election after replacing Sir Tony as prime minister in 2007.

It came after the Tory leader Kemi Badenoch wrote a letter to the Cabinet Secretary demanding formal pre-election talks with officials.
Ms Badenoch has said she wants mandarins to be fully included in Tory plans for radical reform should Burnham’s gamble backfire.
In a letter to Dame Antonia Romeo, which was featured in The Mail on Sunday, Ms Badenoch said she believes Burnham will call an election sooner rather than later.
She says this is because WorkThe current manifesto “does not allow him to raise the taxes he wishes to pursue his agenda.”
Access talks traditionally take place around twelve to sixteen months before the end of a parliament and are used to help the civil service and opposition parties prepare for a possible change of government.
Speaking in Ukraine this week, Mr Burnham stressed that early elections are not “not what people are looking for right now”.
Asked by ITV News why he wouldn’t benefit from Labour’s recent rise in the polls Reform is catching up with Britainsaid Mr Burnham: ‘I’ll tell you why not – because I’m focused on the needs of the country and not on party political interests.’
Despite his denial, Reform UK has also said their conference will take place this weekend used to put their party on a snap election footing.
