Kin star shares disappointing update on future of show as fans are desperate for season 3

One of the stars of Irish crime drama Kin has teased the fate of the series’ famous Kinsella clan ahead of a highly anticipated third season.

The RTE gangland thriller, starring Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne, Aidan Gillen and Ciaran Hinds, has kept viewers glued to two seasons since its 2021 premiere.

Kin was an instant hit on the Irish broadcaster, with the season two finale attracting almost 600,000 viewers, before both seasons were rushed to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in February 2024.

Despite the show’s critical acclaim – the first series has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes – rumors have emerged that Kin may not return for a third run due to the expiration of the main cast’s contracts.

Sinan Sicimoglu, who played the pawn shop owner in season two, revealed to the Irish sun: ‘It’s the end of the Kinsellas because all the main actors signed three-year contracts to appear in Kin in 2020, but it’s now 2024 and that contract has expired.’

One of the stars of Irish crime drama Kin has suggested that the series’ main cast from the Kinsella clan may never return, casting doubt on a third season

This would eliminate leading members Cox (Michael Kinsella), Dunne (Amanda Kinsella), Gillen (Frank Kinsella), Emmett Scanlon (Jimmy Kinsella) and Sam Keeley (Eric Kinsella) – all of whom have appeared in every episode RTE has so far produced. .

Other Kinsella members include Anthony (Mark McKenna Jr) and Bren (Francis Magee), who have appeared in 15 and nine of the 16 episodes respectively so far.

Dunne, who brings the Kinsella matriarch to life, previously opened up about the prospects of a third installment and admitted she was in the dark about any plans.

However, contrary to Sicimoglu’s comments, she added that she would be willing to return.

‘If it comes back, I would be very happy. But if not, we should just count our blessings from what we had. Either way, we’ll be fine,” she said on the red carpet for the Irish Film & Television Awards – where Kin won Best Drama.

Dunne added, “I think if we can get all the stars aligned and get everyone’s availability, we would all get back together because there are some big stars involved.”

But she too has suggested a third season may not come to fruition in the past, citing conflicting schedules and contracts as a potential hurdle.

She said Goss.ie: ‘It depends on what I have on the table by then, because my contract is now finished.

‘We’re not attached to it anymore, so we can do whatever we want. That’s why I don’t think season three will happen.”

The Witness Number 3 star added that Cox, the male lead of Kin, is now increasingly busy with the upcoming Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again.

Despite all the speculation, the good news for Kin is that it will likely get even bigger in May when it is added to Netflix.
