Jacob Elordi could be in for a rare career setback with the release of his latest film, The Dog Stars.
The post-apocalyptic drama, directed by Ridley Scott, has been absolutely savaged by critics ahead of its nationwide release this week.
It debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of just 38%, making it one of the worst-reviewed blockbusters of the year so far.
Set after a devastating flu pandemic, The Dog Stars follows a former pilot (played by Elordi) who flees his safe zone in search of a better life after hearing a mysterious radio broadcast.
There’s also Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley and Allison Janney.
The reviews were brutal, with The Daily Beast writing, “No amount of aesthetic splendor can compensate for the derivativeness of the director’s latest, a post-apocalyptic yarn stitched together from the decomposing parts of its genre progenitors.”

“The Dog Stars is a strange, misguided beast, a post-apocalyptic drama that grows worse for wear even before the bandits arrive,” wrote The AV Club.
“This wasteland story is the most boring film of Ridley Scott’s career,” snarled RogerEbert.com.
However, some critics were much more favorable to the film, with Polygon saying, “Ridley Scott piles on epic action sequences and surreal, surprising sequences that at times push the film from prestige drama to absurdist spectacle.”
“While The Dog Stars can be shaky in its execution, Scott’s affection for his main characters gives the story an understated warmth,” Screen Daily wrote.
Elordi has had a string of consecutive hits to his name in recent years, including Frankenstein and Euphoria.
He also starred in the blockbusters Wuthering Heights and Saltburn.
Elordi and his new girlfriend Kendall Jenner made their relationship public in April when they were glimpsed passionately kissing at the after-party for Bieber’s Coachella performance after being set up by Jenner’s younger sister Kylie.
In the intervening months, their romance has seen them visit Hawaii and Japan together, with the pair even going viral on TikTok for holding hands in Tokyo.

The couple also traveled to London for the premiere of The Dog Stars.
Their trip included a glamorous dinner at Cipriani with Elordi’s father John, followed by the film’s red carpet event on Thursday.
It is reported that Elordi booked the $82,000 per night penthouse suite at the famous London hotel Claridge’s for himself and his girlfriend in an attempt to impress her.
“Jacob is a real romantic and he wanted Kendall to have that amazing view of London where you can see the stars,” an insider told The Sun.
“The upgrade was worth the money,” they added.
Sources claimed in April that the pair were “making out” while attending Bieber’s Coachella after-party, via Deuxmoi.
An insider exclusively told the Daily Mail that they were dating “as early as early February” thanks to a bit of matchmaking from Kendall’s sister Kylie Jenner.
At the time, Jenner’s friend Timothée Chalamet was waging a best actor Oscar campaign for his turn as an underground ping-pong champion in Marty Supreme.

Meanwhile, Elordi was also nominated for a series of awards for his role as the monster in Guillermo Del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein.
“Kylie was around Jacob a lot during Timothée’s marathon because Jacob was nominated for Frankenstein and Timothée was nominated for Marty Supreme,” the source explained to the Daily Mail.
“Kylie is the alpha sister and pushed Kenny to start a romance with Jacob because she wanted to arrange double dates with Timothée.”
The insider shared, “Kenny’s house is where all the parties happen, there’s a lot of action there, so the four of them got close there,” the source expanded, revealing that “Kenny found out that we just hit it off with Jacob… there was chemistry.”
Jenner and Elordi were seen in an excited conversation at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Hollywood in March, sparking a burst of romance rumors from fans.
In May, they were seen drinking rosé together on a beach in Hawaii.
Elordi’s dating history includes Lori Loughlin’s daughter Olivia Jade, who was disgraced in the college admissions scandal, as well as Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber and his The Kissing Booth co-star Joey King.
Meanwhile, Jenner dated Bad Bunny for about a year before splitting in late 2023, only to briefly rekindle their romance in 2024 and then go their separate ways.
