Harry Garside reveals plans to take home Australia’s first ever boxing gold medal from Paris Olympics – and why he is a ‘sick puppy’

Boxing star Harry Garside has revealed his optimistic hopes for the Australian boxing team at the 2024 Paris Olympics and how many medals he wants them to win.

The 26-year-old Olympic bronze medalist admitted to The Project on Friday that he hoped the Australian boxing team – which has never won a gold medal at the Olympics – would take home four medals this year.

‘We’re going to win several, I’ll be one of them. We are going to win a lot, I call it four medals,” he started.

“I think we have a huge opportunity to get to the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, let’s hope we can inspire some people!”

The Melbourne-born boxer then revealed the one exercise he hated during his training sessions.

‘I’m a bit of a sick puppy, I like to wreck myself during training sessions. But the exercise bikes on the bikes are worthless, getting punched in the face is the fun of it!’

After winning bronze at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Garside has made no secret of his desire to chase Australia’s first Olympic gold medal in boxing, competing in the sport’s lightweight division.

In December, he revealed on The Project his theory about why Australia had never won gold despite producing some incredible boxers.

“I think the difference between professional boxing and amateur boxing is that they’re almost two different sports, right?” he said.

Professional boxing takes a little longer, and we’ve had a lot of great fighters, but amateur boxing, the Kazakhs, Uzbeks, the Soviets and the Cubans, they’re great amateur boxers and they’re really hard to beat in three rounds and I think that’s why Australia hasn’t had much success.’

Despite never having achieved this before, Garside said he was confident his team would get to the Games.

“I think we have a great team, we have eleven other athletes and I think every one of them is capable of having a medal shot,” he said.
