The pair secretly reunited to write the latest edition of the much-loved BBC series, with the most recent special broadcast in 2019.
James and Ruth, who play Smithy and Nessa in the show, shocked fans when they announced the news on Friday.
On Instagram, the pair shared a black and white photo of themselves holding up the script.
Alongside the message they wrote: ‘Some news… It’s official! We’ve finished writing the very last episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. I love Ruth and James!’

It was previously reported that a new episode of Gavin And Stacey was in the works, but Ruth Jones denied this.
Reports circulated online claiming that the cast would be filming a new episode this summer with plans to air it at Christmas, five years after a dramatic cliffhanger.
But Ruth insisted the speculation was “unfortunately a rumour” during an interview on Irish station RTE Radio 1.
Asked about the reports, she said: ‘Apparently there’s a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says ‘a source says’ who is this source?’
Ruth added: “It’s unfortunately a rumor… All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, James and I would be happy to announce it, we would.”
The critically acclaimed series follows the lives of the two titular characters Gavin from Essex and Stacey from South Wales, documenting key points in their long-distance relationship and events that bring the two families together.
Gavin And Stacey first aired in 2007 and lasted just 21 episodes, spanning three seasons and two Christmas specials. The show’s popularity was stratospheric, with the 2019 Christmas special attracting a whopping 18.49 million viewers.
