Democratic driver who fatally plowed into Republican teen is NOT under house arrest or curfew

The North Dakota Democrat, who killed an 18-year-old Republican with his car, is temporarily free without parole after paying $50,000 bail.

Shannon Brandt, 41, is a free man after admitting he plowed the Cayler Ellingson, 18, with his SUV in the small town of McHenry, North Dakota, on Sept. 18, according to court documents obtained by Fox news.

The filings showed Brandt’s bail conditions prohibiting him from leaving the state, drinking alcohol, owning a firearm or contacting the Ellingson family.

Although Brandt will be tested periodically to confirm his sobriety, he is not bound by house arrest or prohibited from being outside after a certain amount of time.

Brandt fled the crime scene after hitting Ellingson last week, but later returned to call 911 before returning to his home near where he was arrested.

According to an affidavit, Brandt told police that Ellingson “is part of a Republican extremist group” and had an altercation with the teen about politics. Brandt went on to explain that he left the scene because the 18-year-old had threatened him.

Police in North Dakota later said there is “no evidence” that politics was involved when a man fatally hit a teenager with his SUV after allegations of a “political argument.”

Brandt will appear at the Foster County Courthouse in Carrington on October 11.

North Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Bryan Niewind debunked claims that Brandt and Ellingson were getting a political argument when he revealed to Fox News that his department’s investigation so far has “found no evidence to support the claim” that the murder was politically motivated. .

“We have found no evidence to support Mr Brandt’s claim about the 911 call he made that Cayler Ellingson is a Republican extremist, nor that he was politically involved in this incident,” Niewind told the outlet.

“This is a terrible tragedy for the Ellingson family. We continue to investigate what led to the incident, the crash itself and Brandt’s claim. But at the moment there is no evidence to confirm Brandt’s statement.’

It’s unclear how police came to the conclusion, but it may have to do with the fact that Ellingson’s parents revealed they were acquainted with Brandt. However, the teenage parents, who were not named, told police they did not believe Cayler had met Brandt before the encounter.

The affidavit further reveals that Ellingson’s mother told investigators that the teen called her shortly before the incident, which happened around 2:35 a.m. to ask if the family knew Brandt.

She said her son called back a short time later to tell her he was being “chased” by Brandt. The mother was unable to reach her son after that, the document shows.

It’s unclear what Brandt was up to at the small street party on a dirt road off Johnston Street and Jones Ave, in the small rural town of just over 60 people.

Neighbors have since told reporters that Brandt was unstable, saying the 41-year-old is “crazy all his life” and “in a [mental health] institute.’

Ellingson’s parents did not comment on the extent of their relationship with the man, who is currently free while police investigate the murder.

Brandt, meanwhile, who is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death after failing to assist a dying Ellingson twice after the initial blow and then returning to the scene to call the police, is out on bail.

The 18-year-old’s family held a funeral for him in Carrington on Monday.
