Dave Portnoy has joined the Atlanta Falcons in drafting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. just weeks after signing Kirk Cousins ββto a four-year, $180 million contract.
The 35-year-old Cousins ββwas said to be “a little stunned” by the move, according to The Athletic, as the Falcons selected a direct rival for his spot with the eighth pick of the night. He was only informed of the move while the Falcons were on the clock Thursday night.
Barstool Sports founder Portnoy wasted no time in criticizing the organization for their decision.
βThe Falcons are not serious people,β he wrote on X. βI like Penix, by the way. I like him more than everyone except Drake Maye.
βI just don’t understand what you’re doing when you just signed Cousins. Are you trying to win or not? Of course these are the same idiots who passed on (Bill) Belichick.β

Belichick was heavily linked with a move to Atlanta after his era with the New England Patriots ended after last season, but the Falcons instead hired Raheem Morris as head coach.
Morris and Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot quickly came out Thursday night to explain their decision, insisting that Penix was chosen with the future in mind.
βKirk Cousins ββis our quarterback, we’re very excited about Kirk. Very excited about this team. Michael Penix is βββ we’re talking about the future,β Fontenot said.
βIf you can add a high caliber player like that, with his intangibles, those tools, he’s a winner. Very, very excited. Don’t let that opportunity pass you by.
‘If [Penix] is four to five years, which is a big problem because we are doing so well in that position.’
Comparisons have already been made to Aaron Rodgers who had Jordan Love behind him with the Green Bay Packers. Love had an excellent season last year, his first as the franchise’s No. 1 pick.
