David Moyes copies Jose Mourinho’s iconic touchline celebration

Eat your heart out, Jose! David Moyes copies the iconic touchline celebration after Jarrod Bowen scored the late winner to win the Europa Conference League…

David Moyes joked that he couldn’t go ‘full Jose Mourinho’ with his sideline celebration because his knees wouldn’t allow it.

The Scot ran to celebrate Jarrod Bowen’s last-minute winner and clinch Europa Conference League glory for West Ham.

It was a return to Mourinho making the iconic celebratory run at Old Trafford when he was manager of Porto – but Moyes would not budge.

“The moment Jarrod went through, I slid down the sideline. I thought ‘now is the time,'” Moyes said afterwards.

“I was probably half way through the line because I couldn’t do a full Mourinho! I can’t move my knees and the grass was a bit dry, so I was afraid I would fall on my stomach.’

Asked to understand the moment Bowen lifted the trophy for West Ham, their first European piece of silverware in 58 years, Moyes added: “I ran down and talked to Jarrod about it…at first I thought it wasn’t an offside wash, right? Then Jarrod said it seemed like an eternity for the ball to go into the net.

“Scoring for us in the last minute of the game almost gave us a real chance to hold on.”

The West Ham captain hailed Moyes as West Ham’s best manager following the success in Prague and Moyes himself claimed it was the best win of his career, leading Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad and West Ham under his tenure.

‘This is fantastic. I’ve had a long football career and you don’t get moments like this very often,” Moyes told BT Sport.

“Moments like this don’t happen very often as managers. This is a great moment for us.

‘It’s a brilliant club in the East End of London doing great work in the community. It’s a great family club. It’s getting better and stronger. This is another step towards further progress.’

“We went undefeated in Europe, which is incredible. We only lost in a semi-final last year, two incredible years and now we’re getting another one.’

Asked if this is the pinnacle of his career, he added, “I should say it.

‘The moments when you celebrate with your family and win in the last minute of the game, that doesn’t happen often. It may go against you, but tonight is a brilliant feeling.

“If someone had said three years ago when I took the job that you would avoid relegation and finish in Europe, I would have said you were crazy.

“This competition has been great for us, the players have been remarkable.”
