Australian parents have been warned not to buy potentially dangerous and deadly children’s toys that are on sale before Christmas.

NSW Fair Trading inspectors have launched their latest operation, visiting companies with a history of selling non-compliant toys.

Minister Víctor Dominello said he was the “number one focus” of the organization this Christmas.

“NSW Fair Trading’s number one focus this Christmas is to keep children safe by removing dangerous toys from sale, which is why our inspectors are scouring the market for toys and other products that may cause harm,” said the Mr Dominello.

“We found that most non-compliant toys are made overseas and imported directly into the country by retailers or wholesalers.”

Individuals found to have violated mandatory safety regulations could be fined up to $500,000.

Meanwhile, corporations could face a hefty $10 million fine.

Toys deemed dangerous by NSW Fair Trading, including those where removable batteries are not properly fitted with a child resistant cover and secured with a locking device.

Small parts that present a choking hazard are also considered dangerous.

Toys and puzzles containing small, high-powered magnets that could be fatal to children if swallowed are prohibited for sale.

Dominello said projectile toys should only be used with adult supervision.

In 2021, NSW Fair Trading visited 203 traders and inspected 840 individual children’s products.

Only eight dangerous toys were identified and removed from shelves, compared to 24 removed from stores in the pre-Christmas 2018 checks.
