Development on The Super Mario Bros. film began in the mid-2010s, and the project was confirmed to be in production in 2017.

The video game franchise had previously been the basis for the 1993 film Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper.

The film was a critical and commercial failure, though it has gained a cult following in the years since its release.

Pratt and Day were revealed to have been cast as plumbers during a Nintendo Direct presentation that took place in September 2021.

Other cast members in the film include Fred Armisen, Keegan Michael-Key, and Sebastian Maniscalco.

Charles Martinet, who usually voices Mario and Luigi in the video game series, will also make a cameo in the film.

The trailer for the film was revealed to the public during a Nintendo Direct presentation that took place last October.

The Super Mario Bros. movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on April 5.
