Chess Grand Master Magnus Carlsen weds in lavish Oslo ceremony – days after shock return to tournament after being booted out for wearing jeans

Magnus Carlsen has tied the knot with Ella Victoria Malone in an elegant ceremony in Norway.

The chess grandmaster was photographed kissing his 26-year-old bride Ella Victoria Malone outside Oslo’s Holmenkollen Chapel.

According to Norwegian media reports, details of the ceremony were largely kept secret ahead of the big day.

However, as photos of the wedding reveal, the event appeared to be lavish, with beautiful floral and foliage decorations adorning the exterior of the chapel.

Meanwhile, the bride looked spectacular in a white dress, with a voluminous skirt and a sweetheart neckline.

The top of the dress was covered in lace, creating a high-necked style with long sleeves.

The back of the dress had a keyhole detail. The photos do not show that the bride is wearing a veil, so the feature is fully appreciated.

Emma opted to wear her brunette locks styled into a low bun with a center parting, and completed her bridal look with a fresh makeup look, featuring dewy skin, peach blush and a pink lip.

The newlyweds appeared elated as they kissed in front of photographers, beaming as people snapped photos.

They were first seen together publicly as a couple at the Freestyle Chess GOAT Challenge in Germany in February.

After making their relationship public, Emma was regularly spotted supporting her world No. 1 chess player at various events, including the World Rapid & Blitz Championships in New York in December.

The wedding comes just days after Magnus revealed he would return to a major tournament after organizers announced they would relax dress code rules.

On December 27, the Norwegian was defending his World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in New York when governing body FIDE told him he could not continue while wearing jeans.

He said he offered to change his pants for the next day before he was fined and was told to change immediately.

After significant backlash, FIDE announced on December 30 that they would relax the dress code to allow for “elegant minor deviations” from the official list of acceptable attire.

As a result, Magnus said he will return to the tournament on Monday, but insisted he would continue to wear jeans as a matter of principle.

SEALED WITH A KISS: The newlyweds were not shy and showed their affection for each other with a passionate hug outside the chapel

“Long story short, I’m playing at least one more day here in New York,” Carlsen said in an interview with the YouTube channel for the Take Take Take app. “If all goes well, another day after that.”

He added: ‘On principle I will definitely play in jeans tomorrow.’

After the incident, the 34-year-old revealed that he had spoken to FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich.

“When I spoke with Dvorkovich and main sponsor Turlov, I felt that we could have fruitful discussions and ultimately I decided to play,” he continued.

‘I also enjoy playing blitz chess. I want to give the fans the opportunity to see me play. Who knows, it could be the last time.”

On 27 December, he withdrew from the championships, with chess’s governing body fining Carlsen $200 (£158) after offering him the opportunity to put on proper attire, which he declined.

However, after being told not to continue, he reportedly replied: ‘I’m out, f*** you’.

Carlsen, world champion between 2013 and 2023, said he had a lunch appointment before the round and had to make a quick change.

The couple made their public debut last February. Since then, Emma has supported her husband at several tournaments

“I put on a shirt, a jacket and honestly, like I hadn’t even thought about jeans, even changed my shoes,” Carlsen told Take Take Take, a chess tracking app.

‘I didn’t even think about it. First of all I got a fine, which is fine, and then I got a warning that I wouldn’t be coupled up if I didn’t change. They said I could do it after the third round today.”

The Norwegian grandmaster is the most talked-about name in chess. He has won 64 major titles in chess since emerging as a prodigious talent in the early 2000s.

In addition to chess, the Norwegian has also taken his talents into the world of fantasy football.

Midway through the 2019/20 Premier League season, Carlsen climbed to number one on the league’s official fantasy table, topping a list of over 7 million players.
