‘You always felt that when you came up against him you had to be at the top of your game or you would get into trouble because he was very consistent.

‘He was always eight, seven, eight, seven [out of 10]. For me he was a role model and someone who, looking back, I really appreciated playing against. I learned a lot from him.’

It was during his time with the Gunners that Fabregas’ skills really developed as he quickly became an essential part of Arsene Wenger’s squad.

During his eight seasons in North London, the Spaniard made 303 appearances and earned the club captaincy along the way.

Despite claiming an FA Cup with Arsenal, Fabregas was destined for bigger and better things and sealed a return to Barcelona in August 2011.

For three years, Fabregas played his role in one of football’s best teams, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi, all coached by Pep Guardiola.

He played 151 games for the Catalan side, winning a LaLiga, Copa del Rey and two SuperCopas in that time.

It was also around this time that Spain asserted its dominance on the international stage, with Fabregas as a key figure.

Over five seasons, he made 198 appearances and played an integral role in their title-winning side under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in 2014/15 and 2016/17.

He left Chelsea in 2019 for Monaco, where he spent four years before joining Como, where he ended his career.
