The 36-year-old’s body was found in bed at the Black Sheep Hostel in Medellin, the capital of Antioquia province.

The man’s girlfriend discovered the body after she checked in at reception and went to the room.

Local press say that this year, 20 non-migrant foreigners were found dead in various circumstances in the Aburra Valley, the natural basin of the Medellin River and one of the country’s most densely populated valleys in the Andean region.

All but one died in Medellin. Thirteen were American and another British. Only one of the deaths is being treated as a homicide.

The Black Sheep Hostel is a favorite among travelers in Medellin.

It describes itself online as a New Zealand/Colombian-run establishment in a quiet area of Medellin called Patio Bonito in El Poblado, near two major shopping centers and an area with hundreds of bars and restaurants.
