Anthony Taylor is GOADED by furious Roma fans at Budapest airport

Under fire referee Anthony Taylor had to be escorted to a room by a mob of irate Roma supporters after they were enraged by his performance during their Europa League final defeat.

The Italian side lost to Sevilla on penalties after the outright confrontation was turned on the wrong foot. Paulo Dybala’s first-half strike was canceled out by Gianluca Mancini’s own goal, condemning Jose Mourinho to his first European final defeat.

Mourinho was left furious long after the final whistle at the Puskas Arena, insulting Taylor’s performance as a ‘bull’ before labeling him a ‘damned disgrace’ in the car park.

Tasked with overseeing a spirited affair, Taylor waved 14 yellow cards at Roma and Sevilla players, the most ever shown in a single Europa League tie.

He also made several contentious decisions, having awarded Sevilla a penalty before reversing his call and denying Roma a penalty for a possible handball.

The police hurriedly led Taylor to a private room

And anger continued to flood the club, with a large group of Roma supporters directing their anger directly at Taylor after he was spotted at the airport.

Disturbing images posted to social media show groups angrily chanting towards Taylor, forcing police officers to hastily lead him to a private room.

In one video, the person holding the camera appeared to grab Taylor’s backpack.

When the 44-year-old was brought to safety, groups of fans argued among themselves, with police calling for calm after a chair was launched into the terminal.

Another angle shows Taylor making his way through the crowd, possibly surrounded by his family. A supporter dressed in a white T-shirt steps forward to yell in the official’s face with his phone raised before a member of Taylor’s party pushes him away.

Fluid is then sprayed in their direction, covering a man. Finally, the group was rushed through the door, with an officer catching the flying chair in the air.

According to Football Italia, the fan who threw the chair is being held by police.

Referee’s charity Ref Support UK declared the abuse ‘so, so concerning’.

On Twitter, they wrote: “This is so, so worrying to watch and we hope Anthony and his family are doing well.

“That is why we believe that organizations such as the @LMA_Managers and the @PFA as well as the @WeAreTheFSA should come out and condemn such behavior in this country.

“Manager comments and player behavior encourage this and it becomes alarming when a serious incident or murder is imminent.”

Taylor was accused by Mourinho of ‘looking Spanish’ for the number of yellow cards he handed out, and the veteran coach angrily confronted the referee after the game.

Deep in the bowels of the ground, Mourinho raged against Taylor in several languages.

“F***ing shame man, it’s a terrible shame,” Mourinho ranted, before turning to swearing at the official in Italian. “F*** off,” he continued.

He then approached the referee’s minibus and snapped, “Congratulations, damn shame,” before trudging towards the team bus.

The game dragged on in the course of the evening with 25 minutes of stoppage time divided over the four halves. At one point, Roma midfielder Nemanja Matic stopped play out of exhaustion, causing Sevilla’s bench to bounce in frustration.

This only added to Mourinho’s anger and he was seen arguing with members of Sevilla’s backroom team on the edge of the penalty area, forcing him to be detained.

Taylor then stepped in and awarded Mourinho a yellow card.

“We’re not playing the Champions League next year and that’s a good thing because we’re not made for it,” said Mourinho.

“And let’s hope Taylor only leads games in the Champions League and does the same bull**** as tonight, and not in the Europa League.”

Ironically, Mourinho also stated that Roma had not lost their ‘dignity’ through defeat.

“I’ve won five European finals over the years and on this occasion I’m no less proud than the five times I’ve won,” he said after the game.

“I’m proud of the players. I told them before that we would either leave with the cup or we would die.

“We leave dead on our feet. The players are totally exhausted and so am I, both physically and mentally.

“We felt pressure against a team that has more talent than us. We lost a game, but no dignity. I’ve never gone home prouder than today, even when I won.’
