EastEnders viewers were once again in tears as the square processed the tragic death of Lola Pearce on Thursday.

In what has been described as the “saddest ever” exit, Lola (Danielle Harold) lost her battle with brain cancer on Wednesday.

And in heartbreaking scenes, her father Billy (Perry Fenwick) and stepmother Honey (Emma Barton) were overcome with grief.

Fans were left in pieces when Honey encouraged him to express his anger at Lola’s death as they shouted into the air “This is unfair” before bursting into tears.

The pair then vowed to somehow get through the pain together.

On Wednesday, Lola’s loved ones gathered around her on a stormy night in Albert Square after her nurse warned them she might have only hours to live.

Fans saw Lola’s emotional husband Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) say his last goodbye.

Jay struggled to say goodbye and quickly became emotional, “I can’t say, I can’t. You won’t leave me, you’re in my bones, my veins, it’s not our time.

“If there is a god, we still have a chance. Maybe we’ll come back as something else, you and Lex. An ant family. Maybe you’ll come back as a fox. As long as I can come back with you. This isn’t goodbye, I don’t have to say it.’

Jay stepped out of the room for a moment, and when he re-entered the room, he found that the bad weather had lifted and that “the sun had risen” for his wife.

When he turned to look at Lola, he realized that while he was out of the room, she had sadly passed away.

Jay burst into tears, as Lexi woke up and reassured her stepdad, she said, “She did it for us”

After a tribute to Lola at the Queen Vic, the residents awoke to the sun and birds singing, unaware of the tragic news that was about to befall them.

In the closing moments, a fox ran across the square, symbolizing Lola after Jay previously told his wife that she could come back as a fox.

BBC viewers then saw Lexi and Jay rock Lola’s body and sob, struggling with their grief as EastEnders’ famous Julia’s Theme played.
