Speak with Australian Men’s Healththe radio host explained that after calling time on his playing career, his health started to take a backseat.
“I haven’t been to the gym in 13 years,” Brendan told the publication.
‘After I retired I didn’t see the point as I had no reason to keep fit.’
Brendan added that when he stopped exercising, the calories he consumed continued to ‘pile up’.
“Eating as much as I used to was fine when I was playing football because I burned a lot of it through exercise,” he said.
“But after I started exercising less, it all piled up.”

After realizing he needed to make a lifestyle change, Brendan initially lost a whopping 30kg by following the keto diet – and has since lost even more.
Brendan said the early hours working in breakfast radio had led to him eating more carbohydrate-rich foods.
“Working breakfast hours makes me tired at the wrong times, and before I was just eating carbs all the time and not getting the good stuff to keep me awake,” he said.
‘I don’t want to put all the blame on breakfast hours, because you can still eat well at those times, but it’s about the decisions you make.’
He revamped his diet with a 30-day challenge from Keto Australia after tipping the scales at 128kg.
The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that aims to put the body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel, which helps cause weight loss.
“I’m literally walking down the street now and people are like, ‘Is that Fev?’ because I’m fading,” he said.
