World champions Argentina return to top of FIFA rankings

La Albiceleste returns to the top after six years. France is second, while Brazil drops to third.

World Cup winners Argentina top the FIFA rankings for the first time in six years.

Lionel Scaloni’s side, which clinched their third world title with a thrilling victory against France in the World Cup final in Qatar in December, won friendlies against Panama and Curaçao during the March international break.

Captain Lionel Messi reached two milestones in those matches, scoring his 800th career goal in a 2-0 win over Panama before scoring 100 international goals when he scored a hat-trick in a 7-0 defeat of Curaçao.

Argentina last topped the table in 2017, but La Albiceleste fell to 12th the following year after a disappointing campaign at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Argentina replace top rivals Brazil after the Seleção suffered a surprise friendly defeat to World Cup semi-finalist Morocco in March, dropping them to third place.

France is second in the table following their Euro 2024 qualifying victories over the Netherlands and Ireland, with the rest of the top 10 remaining unchanged.

Belgium remains fourth and England fifth, followed by the Netherlands sixth, Croatia seventh and Italy eighth. Portugal and Spain complete the top 10.

Morocco, which has joined Spain and Portugal in a bidding plan for the 2030 World Cup, remained at 11 to lead the African teams.

The Central African Republic was the biggest climber in the latest ranking, jumping 10 places to 122nd place.

The United States remained 13th, two ahead of regional rival Mexico.

Japan tops the Asian teams with 20 and Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup, dropped to 61.
