A woman who threatened to report a man for rape unless he paid her £5,000 after they had consensual sex has been jailed for more than two years.

Tahereh Ghorbanlou, 34, blackmailed her victim after meeting him on an online dating app in March 2021, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

A court heard they started talking to each other before meeting up at the victim’s home in Nottingham on March 12 that year.

Ghorbanlou, of Upper Lighthorne, Warwickshire, and the victim had a drink together before having consensual sex, after which Ghorbanlou made the comment that he would have to pay for sex next time.

The victim dismissed this as a joke and they parted on ‘good terms’, but in the following days she sent him messages trying to extort money from him.

Ghorbanlou claimed she was injured and in pain and that he would be fined £30,000 if a sexual offense was reported to police.

Ghorbanlou then sent him her bank details and demanded he transfer £5,000 or she would go to the police and accuse him of ‘sexual assault’.

The victim immediately reported the threats to officers and an investigation into her fake rape fraud was launched.

Ghorbanlou was arrested and told officers she had been a victim of sexual assault, but refused to provide a written statement or sign the comments she had made.

After being released on bail, she contacted police again on March 20, 2021 to file a counter-accusation of rape against the man.

Nottinghamshire Police said detectives investigated both allegations but found no evidence that Ghorbanlou was the victim of any sexual offence.

And the mobile phone data also showed that Ghorbanlou had tried to blackmail the man.

She had searched the Internet the day after the alleged rape and Googled “price for sexual violence” and “definition of sexual violence.”

Ghorbanlou made no comment during police interrogations, but eventually pleaded guilty to blackmail more than two years later, in May.

She was sentenced to two years and three months in prison at Nottingham Crown Court last Wednesday, September 6.

Detective Inspector Chris Berryman, of Nottinghamshire Police, said afterwards: ‘The victim did absolutely the right thing in this case by reporting Ghorbanlou’s demands to us.

‘She made devious and dishonest threats in an attempt to extort money from the victim and then made a completely false rape allegation against him.

‘I am pleased that her callous behavior has been exposed through our investigation and that a judge has seen fit to put her behind bars.

‘I also hope that this case shows that Nottinghamshire Police takes blackmail and extortion crimes very seriously and is there to help anyone who feels threatened in this way.

“The victim was wrongly accused of a very serious crime and subsequently endured a two-year trial and trial.

“The prison sentence imposed on Ghorbanlou will hopefully allow him to move on with his life.”
