Wigan Athletic players have refused to train as they await unpaid wages for the fifth time this season.

The Latics are currently at the bottom of the Championship and serious concerns have been raised about the financial situation in the past.

Wigan failed to pay players on four separate occasions and received a three-point deduction from the English Football League this week as a result.

After group meetings, the players have now decided not to attend training until the problem is resolved, according to wigan today.

Center-back Steven Caulker criticized the owner’s ‘outrageous lies’, quoting Julian Assange in a LinkedIn post.

Wigan Athletic centre-back Steven Caulker, 31, criticized the owner’s ‘outrageous lies’

Wigan’s players have refused to train while awaiting unpaid wages for the fifth time this season.

He wrote: ‘This lies to us as Wigan Athletic FC have told the players which is absolutely outrageous.

‘There may be reasons for late payment once or twice, but for the boys to have experienced this 5 times this season is completely unacceptable.

“As players, we are told every day that the money is on the way and ‘hopefully’ it will arrive in our account in the afternoon. 14 days later, the money still hasn’t arrived.’

The 31-year-old continued: “Also, what is more worrying is that we are due to be paid again on April 7 and the club cannot confirm if they will have enough funds for this.”

‘Since I arrived at this club I have seen the players and the coaching staff work tirelessly to try to keep this club in the championship. It is really painful now to see that this task becomes more and more difficult with each passing day.

‘As the famous saying goes “Being silent while witnessing injustice also makes you guilty of oppression.” Well my position is clear, I stand with the honest and hard working staff and players whose mental health is now affected by this.

The former Premier League club, who also won the FA Cup in 2013, will play Queens Park Rangers on April 1, but the fixture is now at risk of being cancelled.

Phoenix 2021 Limited completed its takeover of Wigan in March 2021, with Talal Al Hammad serving as club chairman.

Caulker quoted Julian Assange in a LinkedIn post as saying “the money hasn’t arrived yet.”
