Why this single picture of a sign directing visitors to disability toilets at the Royal Hobart Show sparked outrage

A sign warning people of the location of disabled toilets at the Royal Hobart Show has sparked outrage online.

In a photo posted to social media, the sign – which reads ‘disabled toilets this way’ – can be seen pointing to a very steep, long, descending staircase.

A row of portable toilet stalls can be seen on a scaffolding at the bottom of the hill.

“The Royal Hobart Show, 2023. This is why people are evil,” read the message uploaded to X.

Someone attending the Royal Hobart Show on Thursday allegedly moved a sign for the disabled toilets to the top of a staircase, sparking outrage online

A spokesperson for the Royal Hobart Show told Daily Mail Australia the sign had been moved from its original location to an access road down the hill.

“A very smart gambler decided to place it at the top of the stairs,” the spokesman said.

“When we noticed it, we immediately removed the sign.”

In a response to the thread on X about the incident, the Royal Hobart Show apologized for the joke.

‘We sincerely apologize to anyone offended or inconvenienced by this. Thank you for bringing it to our attention,” it said.

X users were quick to condemn the joke.

One user called the act “disgusting.”

‘People are done mate! No understanding,” read another comment.

“Even before Covid, this was one of the reasons I had to limit going out,” said another.

‘If I saw that I would probably sit down and cry. There’s no way I can get that down with a stick… Going home and staying there would be easier.’

The 2023 Royal Hobart show will take place at the Hobart Regatta Grounds on October 26 and 28

The show’s spokesperson said there were plenty of disabled toilets available for visitors during the two-day event.

They said around 20,000 people attended the show on Thursday, which was “the best day we’ve had in years.”

Organized by the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania, the Royal Hobart Show is an annual event that ‘celebrates all that is Australian’, according to its website.

The 2023 event will take place at the Hobart Regatta Grounds from October 26 to 28.
