Where was Squid Game: The Challenge filmed? Inside the impressive hidden UK studio that belongs in Hollywood and was used for major blockbuster
The Netflix original hit Squid Game may be set in South Korea, but the new real-life spinoff is set a little closer to home.
The streaming goliath takes us all the way back to the dystopian competition, where the participant nervously cuts out shapes from Dalgona candies.
But this time the competition will be completely real and filmed on British shores, with 456 players putting their hats in the ring in a bid to win a whopping $4.56 million.
The show’s synopsis reads: “As they compete in a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances and character will be tested as competitors around them are taken down.”

Cardington Studios, Bedford

The game Red Light, Green Light is the first thing that comes to mind for many when they think of the wildly popular K-Drama, Squid Game, and was the only game from Squid Game: The Challenge to be filmed at Cardington studios in Bedford.
The game was filmed in one of the largest indoor spaces in Europe, mainly due to the enormous amount of space required for all 456 players.
According to Cardington Studios, it previously housed zepplins and airships in the 1920s and 1930s. Dexterto.
The two hangers are reportedly large enough to hold four sound stages each, covering an area of more than 100,000 square feet.
Netflix said: “The total playing area from start line to finish line was approximately 100 meters x 40 meters (328 feet x 131 feet).”
Due to its enormous size, Cardington Studios is an ideal place to film many blockbuster films.
According to Filming in EnglandThe star-studded selection of films shot at the location includes Black Widow, Star Wars: The Return of Skywalker (Episode IX), Dumbo (2019), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Wharf Studios, Barking

Contestants from both Britain and the US spent most of their time filming the show at Wharf Studios in London.
Unrecognizable in the trailer as gloomy, cold England, the creator-built sets eerily resembled the architecture from the original series.
But building items to scale was no easy feat; even just to store the amount of bunk beds required required a lot of space.
That’s why they chose to film for 16 days at Wharf Studios in Barking, which has a 10-acre campus with six sound stages.
According to the studio websiteare their facilities ‘purpose built and acoustically treated, with full supporting infrastructure; including production offices, workshops, drive-in access and ample parking.”
Of the production, Netflix said it “occupied a total of six interconnected sound stages, allowing players to live in a fully immersive world.”
“Once the players got in, they never left unless they were eliminated. Players left the dorm and walked through the iconic stairwells of Squid Game.”
The confusing mazes and paths have all been mapped out by production designer Mathieu Weekes, who also worked on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!
Squid Game: The Challenge airs on Netflix on Wednesday, November 22.
