Welder is electrocuted by his charger while he sleeps – and is found clutching his phone in bed

  • Wanchai Deengam was still holding his phone when found dead by police
  • The 27-year-old was discovered in bed in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 8

A 27-year-old welder was found dead in his apartment after being electrocuted by his charging phone while he was asleep.

Wanchai Deengam was still holding his phone when he was found dead by police on his Union Jack-patterned bed in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 8.

He was wearing a pair of shorts and had been bleeding from his mouth, while a burn wound had scolded his right hand.

Meanwhile, his left hand was resting on his white Samsung handset which was connected from a USB charger to an extension cable.

Two rice cookers appeared to have been in use while two fans were connected to the wall socket. There was also a smart watch connected to a charger in the extension cable power point.

Mr Deengam’s devastated brother Somkuan Changsarn, 50, said he had been worried about his sibling as he had not been able to contact him since the night before.

He had knocked on the door several times, until the following morning when he decided it was time to break into the room.

‘I was suspicious because normally, he wasn’t a deep sleeper. I would always see him sitting in front of his room when I finish work,’ said Mr Changsarn.

‘He liked to use his phone just for chatting with friends on the Line application. He used TikTok a lot and Facebook to watch sport but he didn’t play games.

‘We spoke before about using phones while they are charging because there were cases in the news about it happening. But everybody still does. I never thought this could happen or I would have warned my brother more.’

Police Captain Jiratchaya Yordkum, from the Rat Burana Metropolitan Police Station, said they were not looking for anybody else in connection with the death.

‘We found no traces of assault or ransacking. We suspect that a short circuit might have caused his electrocution,’ he commented.

The officer added that Mr Deengam had plugged his power strip straight into the socket without using the proper adapter.

The man’s remains have been sent to a forensics lab to determine the cause of death while relatives prepare for his funeral.

A similar case happened last month when factory worker Puttawat Kamwan, 34, suffered an electric shock while he was sleeping next to his charging phone in Samut Prakan province.
