Wayne Rooney criticized Liverpool’s ‘schoolboy’ defending for Everton’s opening goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s men fell behind in the Merseyside derby after failing to clear their lines before Jarrad Branthwaite poked home the ball in the 27th minute.

It was yet another goal that came from a set-piece for the Toffees, but Rooney pointed out Liverpool’s inability to defend.

The former Manchester United and Everton striker said: ‘We’ve seen this five or six times where Everton have won the first touch in the penalty area.

‘Liverpool will have known that this is one of Everton’s strongest points. This goal, the way they drew the defenders, is actually a schoolboy.

‘Everton put them under pressure and they deservedly took the lead at half-time.’

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher reflected these views when he criticized Liverpool’s inability to defend set pieces.

‘Horrible. How many times have Liverpool given away free-kicks?’ Carragher asked.

‘That’s the name of the game for Everton. Konate, what is he doing? He doesn’t know where he is.

‘Liverpool’s naivety when it comes to the way you play a derby match.’
