Jordan Spieth took a detour through the clubhouse roof on Saturday in a remarkable ending to his third round match at the Valero Texas Open.

The three-time major winner shot a level-par 72, leaving him three under par for the tournament, twelve shots off the lead in San Antonio.

But his scorecard told only half the story after Spieth finished with a double bogey seven, including visits to a drainage ditch and the clubhouse roof.

Spieth’s troubles started when he pulled his drive left on the par-five final hole at TPC San Antonio.

That left world number 19 at the base of a tree, a few meters from the fairway. From there, Spieth opted to hit a daring shot through more hurdles, rather than hitting back to the fairway.

Unfortunately, he found only more trouble: Spieth’s second shot ended up near a drainage ditch – still 183 yards from the hole.

With the drain between his ball and the hole, Spieth had to get creative. Because he shot from a penalty area, he was not given an option. And so the 30-year-old once again opted to hit away from the green and towards the TPC San Antonio clubhouse.

“If you’re going to do that, I’m going to move my car,” someone — presumably his caddy — was heard telling Spieth, who then asked an official, “If I crash it on the deck, where’s my drop?”

After much deliberation, the three-time major winner threw a shot towards the roof of the clubhouse. The ball dripped into the gutter, causing the PGA Tour announcers to panic.

‘This is absurd!’ one joked. “Just Jordan Spieth,” another added. But the shot caused the 30-year-old to fall not far from the fairway. From there, Spieth fired his approach onto the green.

Incredibly, that set him up for a par putt from 55 feet. But Spieth, now visibly furious with himself and struggling to keep his emotions in check, ended up three-putting for par.
