Burnley boss Vincent Kompany could not contain his frustration after a key referee decision went against his side in the 1-1 draw against Wolves on Tuesday evening.

Kompany branded the level of his performance in the Premier League this season as ‘not good enough’ after he was sent off during Saturday’s draw against Chelsea for protesting against Lorenz Assignon’s red card in the first half.

And he was once again left unlucky for the free-kick awarded to Wolves that led to Rayan Ait-Nouri’s equalizer at Turf Moor, canceling out Jacob Bruun Larsen’s opener.

“Don’t touch me again referees!” That’s what Kompany said after the match.

‘But if it had to be done, then that would of course be a problem. If you do a pirouette and fall on your own, without any contact, then it’s simply not a violation, I think we can all agree on that.’

‘But the referee is also in the best position ever, a very good position. He sees it, I can see it three times as far as he can and for some reason a decision is made out of nowhere.

‘Then I look at my own team and how we defend the set-play, that’s always the case, but yes, it’s a repetition and that doesn’t make it any easier.’

Burnley have collected six points from their last four games but are still six points adrift of safety after Nottingham Forest beat Fulham and Everton picked up a valuable point at Newcastle on Tuesday.

Kompany admitted he is happy with the progress his side have made in recent weeks and vowed they will continue to push for an unlikely escape.

‘I can only praise the players. They looked like a Premier League team today,” he added.

‘It doesn’t win us any points and it doesn’t move us higher in the league. Maybe we belong a little higher if there hadn’t been so many bad decisions.

‘At this point we have not earned the right to stay in the Premier League. All we need is a fighting chance, that’s all.

‘It was never going to be an easy season. It’s no surprise that we are where we are today, but what I can guarantee you is that we will continue to fight until the very end.”
