Ute is torn in half in horror crash near Sydney as P-plate driver flees the scene

A van has been torn in two in a crash in Sydney’s west, initially confusing police as no one was at the scene.

The pickup crashed on Kurmond Road, near Meadows Road in Kurmond, a small village 70km west of the city, around 1am on Thursday.

When the police arrived at the scene, the driver had already left.

Approximately two hours later, the 28-year-old male P-plater was found in a wooded area approximately 1.5 km from the crash site.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for a broken collarbone and lacerations.

The man was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition, where he will undergo mandatory testing.
