Urgent ‘do not eat’ recall for popular type of carrot cake and muesli over undeclared allergy fears

Urgent ‘don’t eat’ reminder for popular type of carrot cake and muesli due to undeclared allergy fears

  • Those with nut allergies were warned by health chiefs not to eat the cake and granola
  • Customers are advised to return the products to the retailers

Health chiefs have recalled a popular type of carrot cake and a brand of muesli because it contains nuts with no warning label for allergy sufferers.

The UK’s food safety watchdogs have issued urgent warnings on certain packs of Melting Moments carrot cakes, which contain peanuts, and Rude Health organic ultimate muesli, which contain Brazil nuts.

Both products must list nuts as an ingredient to warn allergy sufferers to avoid them.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) told the public not to eat the products if they are allergic to Brazil nuts or peanuts and instead return them to where they bought it for a full refund.

About one in 50 children and one in 100 adults suffer from a nut allergy in the UK.

Food safety watchdogs have issued an urgent recall for the Melting Moment carrot cakes because they are not properly labeled as containing peanuts

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has told the public not to eat Rude Health’s Organic Ultimate Muesli if they have a Brazil nut allergy and to return it if they purchased this item with an expiration date of February 8, 2024

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to nuts can vary, but in mild cases may include a skin rash, swelling, or vomiting.

More severe cases can cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis, in which the allergic reaction makes it harder to breathe and lowers blood pressure.

Sufferers may experience symptoms immediately after eating a food they are allergic to, or it may occur days later, according to the NHS.

Emergency medications called epinephrine autoinjectors, such as EpiPen, are used in the most severe reactions.

The frosted carrot cake from Melting Moments is sold per six pieces.

Packages with an expiration date of April 26, 2023 and May 1, 2023 are recalled because they contain peanuts that are not listed on the label.

The muesli is made by Rude Health with batches sold in 400g boxes and expiration date of February 24, 2024 being recalled because they contain brazil nuts not listed on the label.

No other batches of the Ultimate Muesli or other Rude Health products have been affected by the recall.

Britons who believe they may have purchased the affected items and are allergic to peanuts or Brazil nuts are urged not to eat them and to contact their retailer for a refund.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO NUTS

Peanuts and tree nuts can cause allergic reactions, which can sometimes be serious.

A severe reaction to nuts is called anaphylaxis and can be life-threatening.

Symptoms often start quickly, within an hour of coming into contact with a nut, and sometimes within minutes.

The body’s immune system normally fights infections, but when a person is allergic to tree nuts or peanuts, the immune system overreacts to proteins in these foods.

Every time the person eats or, in some cases, handles or inhales a peanut or nut, the body thinks the proteins are harmful invaders.

The immune system responds by kicking into high gear to fight off the ‘invader’.

This causes an allergic reaction and symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • vomit
  • Diarrhea
  • Itchy, watery or swollen eyes
  • Hives
  • A drop in blood pressure
