Trump’s first day in court dominated front pages across the country and around the world

‘Trump in the dock’: Every major US newspaper splashes the ex-President’s day in court on their front pages as his arrest dominates coverage at home AND abroad

  • Trump’s arrest made the front pages of newspapers around the world on Tuesday
  • In most cases, he was seen in court in Manhattan answering criminal charges
  • The judge scheduled his next personal appearance in court for December 4

The arrest of former President Donald Trump dominated the font pages of newspapers around the world on Tuesday.

Most included an instantly iconic photo of an expressionless Trump, hunched over a Manhattan courtroom table as he was read the 34 charges he was indicted on.

The few terms that appeared in the headlines told most of the story: “Trump arrested,” “count 34 felonies,” and “plead not guilty.” When he delivered his plea at around 3 p.m., Trump became the first U.S. president to face criminal charges.

The 16-page indictment relates to multiple payouts Trump made in the run-up to the 2016 election.

The most notable, a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, was combined with a $30,000 payout to a doorman trying to sell information about a child Trump allegedly fathered out of wedlock, as well as a $150,000 to former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

Outside of court, there was division between those who saw his indictment as a weaponization of the justice system by overzealous local prosecutor Alvin Bragg, and those who wanted accountability for the Trump years that peaked on January 6.

Following his courtroom appearance — the first of what is expected to be many — Trump retreated to his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate, addressing his followers later in the day to rally support for his upcoming presidential campaign.

The judge overseeing the criminal case has scheduled the next in-person hearing for Dec. 4 — about two months before the 2024 Republican presidential primary officially begins.
