President-elect Donald Trump threatened Monday to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods as long as the countries allow immigrants to flow across the U.S. border.
Turning to Truth Social, Trump said the tariff would apply to “ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculously open borders.”
“This tariff will remain in effect until drugs, especially Fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!”
The president-elect also suggested that the US’s northern and southern neighbors had “the absolute right and power to easily resolve this long-simmering problem.”
“We hereby demand that they use this power, and until they do, it is time for them to pay a very high price!” said the Republican.
Trump has long pushed for Mexico to pay for the wall he wanted to see built between the two countries to prevent migrants from entering the United States.
