More than 300,000 Russians have signed a petition calling for the firing of a train conductor after she threw a cat off a train, believing it was a stray.

The white and red cat named Twix escaped from his owner on a train between Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg on January 11.

He was found by the conductor who threw the animal out of the carriage as the train stopped in Kirov, east of Moscow.

Hundreds of people searched for the animal in sub-zero temperatures, but the cat was found dead on January 20.

There were reports that the animal had died from the cold and was suspected to have suffered animal bites.

The incident has sparked outrage in Russia, with thousands re-sharing images of the cat being dropped in the snow in temperatures approaching -30 degrees Celsius.

A separate petition calling for criminal charges against the conductor had already collected more than 100,000 signatures yesterday, just two days after its launch.

Local authorities have so far declined to prosecute the conductor.
