A tourist has discovered the harsh reality of how different Bali can be depending on the location while showing off the stunning view from her hostel, before noticing her surroundings.
Dutch traveler Luna De Fauw took to TikTok in December to post a video of the view from the balcony of her hostel in Canggu, Bali.
He began his video by showing off the pristine, snapshot-worthy pool that sits within the hostel grounds before moving on to a muddy lot with half-built houses in the distance.
Pictures of Ms de Fauw went viral, showing the bright blue poolside tranquility lined with sun loungers, manicured lawns and palm trees (pictured)
Ms De Fauw’s pictures, which were captioned with ‘Bali Insta vs real life’, showed the bright blue poolside tranquility lined with sun loungers, manicured lawns and palm trees.
He then drifted to next door, where there is a large muddy area with some grass and dilapidated houses, along with a large construction site in the background.
Social media users took to Ms de Fauw’s post to criticize Bali for being “overrated”, but others defended the iconic Australian tourist hotspot.
‘I don’t care what other people say… Bali is a vibe. I love it,’ wrote one commenter.

Dutch traveler Luna De Fauw (pictured) took to TikTok last month to post a video of the view from a balcony in Bali.
“You’ve been seeing way too many people thinking Bali is all glitz and glam on TikTok,” said another.
Some criticized de Fauw for wanting to go cheap on his stay in Bali, calling on him to “pay the price” if he wanted better.
But others saw the lighter side when commenting on the muddy grassy area next to the hostel.
“We love the alternative beach,” one quipped.

It comes after other TikTokkers posted similar holiday hotspot images showing the beauty of an idyllic villa right next to muddy swamps this holiday season.
In November, British tourist Victoria Goulbourne took to TikTok to post the reality of her stay.
His images showed a sparkling pool, swaying palm trees, a deck and chairs before transitioning to a muddy swamp just behind the villa, with the filthy stream flowing through it.
Social media users suggested that it should go in the dry season next time.
“It was probably during the wrong season and not in the best location in the village,” said one commenter.
“The place I stayed in Bali was right on the beach and had my own plunge pool overlooking the ocean. However, we are not trying to cheapen ourselves,” said another.
