Pie lovers outraged by massive ‘non-Australian’ price hike on beloved staple: ‘It’s a crime’

A business selling squeezable ketchup sachets for a whopping $1 each has left Australians furious, with one popular TV host even calling it a “crime.”
An outraged pie lover posted a photo on Reddit on Sunday showing individual servings of Masterfoods barbecue and ketchup being sold at exorbitant prices under the headline: “Wild inflation in western Sydney.”
Other users pointed out that they had also found the same ‘stupid’ price in their areas.
The divisive issue has caused so much traction that comedy writer Susie Youssef addressed the issue on Sunday night’s episode of The Project.

“A dollar for a squeeze sauce is not Australian,” he said.
“That’s why I now carry a condiment tray with me at all times.”
Australians have grown accustomed to the sauce being included with their sausage pie or roll, or sold for a token price of around 20 pence.
Some online commenters said that stores that charge $1 for sauces should be ‘named and shamed’ for doing so, allowing others to avoid them if they wish.
I was at a bakery in Westfield. The cashier asked if he wanted salsa. I thought it was free, I said yes and she only charged me $1′ one said.
Another said: ‘I wouldn’t want to buy your food, this is blatant money grabbing.’
Respectfully tell them to fuck off. The sauce is free with cakes on servos, you’d be buying your food elsewhere,” wrote a third.

One commentator adapted a famous scene from the classic Australian film The Castle, where the father had a common response to anything he considered too expensive.
‘Hello dad, a couple of sauce bags. What do you think? wrote the poster.
‘It couldn’t be more than 10 cents. What does he want for them?
‘Dollar each.’

One sign noted that “You can literally get a whole bottle of ketchup for $1.50 at Coles,” but others defended the business owner, saying times are tough.

“No, what is not Australian is the way the government treats small businesses, wages, taxes and rental prices, which makes all these theses almost impossible to execute without these kinds of margins.” said one.
Another warned those looking to vent their anger not to take it out on the staff, who were just doing their job.
“Just walk away, there’s no use complaining to the 16 year old girl who works there for minimum wage,” they said.
Australia’s Consumer Price Index, which measures inflation, reached 7.3% in September 2022, the highest level in more than three decades.
