Tom Hanks responds to negative reviews of his debut novel because critics have ‘ripped it apart’ and labeled his writing as ‘clumsy’
Tom Hanks has responded to negative reviews and critics who “torn up” his debut novel The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece.
The book is titled The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece and will be released on May 9, 2023.
In a new interview with the BBC on Tuesday, Tom addressed the critics, saying their response is ‘not fair’.
He was “unashamed” and knows that the book “will live and die by its own ability to entertain and enlighten an audience.”
Hanks also said that his “day job as a movie star” means he can handle any criticism. He added: ‘[I’ve become] stronger when it comes to really being torn apart’.

According to the synopsis, the book is based on “a wildly ambitious story about the making of a colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action movie and the humble comic book that inspired it all.”
Many critics were unimpressed with the novel, with The Sunday Times David Sexton describing the book as “Hank’s mansplains movie-making” while labeling the writing as “clumsy.”
Tim Adams of The Observer said “the book captures the humdrumness of Hollywood but lacks its ability to bring characters to life on screen”.
Alexandra Jacobs of The New York Times wrote, “Whimsical chronicling the creation of a Marvel-style movie, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece sinks beneath a deluge of detail.”
Tom is one of the most successful actors of his time with hit films such as Sleepless In Seattle, Saving Private Ryan and Elvis to his credit. His next is Pinocchio.
Included in the book are comic books written by Hanks.
It’s about the movie industry and making a “colossal, star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film and the humble comic book that inspired it,” according to the official synopsis.
There are plenty of his own life lessons in the novel.
“Each character in the book does something that I experienced while making a movie, discovered a philosophy, or learned an important lesson. Even the silly moments are some kind of stunt I pulled or made a mistake that I survived,” he shared with the site.
“The source for a movie can go back as far as history. A story takes place at a single moment in someone’s life, after which all the anecdotes of the present time magnify that moment,’ explains Hanks.
‘Going back to 1947 makes sense, as does starting in, say, 1559. Human desire has proven to be timeless.
“No one knows how a movie is made – although everyone thinks so,” he added. “I’ve done a ton of movies (and four of them are pretty good, I think) and I’m still amazed at how movies come together. From a flickering idea to the flickering image on the screen, the whole process is a miracle.”
The star is an “extremely difficult” male actor. There is also a ‘beautiful’ leading lady.
And of course an ‘eccentric’ director.
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece spans several decades.
