Today viewers call out newsreader Brooke Boney’s ‘odd’ accent: ‘Some days it’s stronger than others’

Today, show reporter Brooke Boney has raised the eyebrows of some viewers after noticing that it seemed like she was now presenting the news with a refined British accent.

The veteran journalist, 37, announced earlier this year that she would be moving to England to study in September, and fans joked that it looks like she is taking speech lessons before she moves.

‘Why does Brooke read the news with the Queen’s accent? She never spoke like that. It sounds a bit strange, some days it’s stronger than other days,” one fan asked on the Media Spy forums.

‘It’s absolutely new. It’s like she’s had speech training or something for the past few months,” another viewer added.

‘I noticed it early last week. It’s usually quite strong in the first sentence of whatever she reads.”

Another fan suggested that Brooke learned to speak with the British Reception Accent before studying at Oxford University.

One upset viewer said the accent sounded fake and asked Boney to return to speaking in her normal voice.

‘It sounds disingenuous. People put that accent on when they imitate or laugh at the royal family. It’s the Today show, not the ABC.’

In March, Brooke announced her shock resignation as news presenter of Channel Nine’s Today show, revealing she would be stepping down in September.

She confirmed on air that she will move abroad to study at Oxford University from September, leaving the show after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in August.

Boney shared a touching message with her fans after announcing her shock resignation live on air.

In an Instagram post after the news broke, the TV star shared a moody image of herself on the street, along with a heartfelt caption.

“I will answer everyone this weekend and we will shed all the tears when I leave in September,” she wrote.

The TV presenter confirmed she will be leaving the hit breakfast show to pursue her teaching dreams.

Boney will take an intensive one-year Masters of Public Policy course, which focuses on economics and policymaking.
