BREAKING NEWS: TikTok WILL LIMIT screen time for users under the age of 18 to 60 minutes per day, and they will be required to enter a passcode to continue watching once the limit is reached.

Social media giant TikTok has announced that it will limit screen time for users under the age of 18 to just 60 minutes a day.

Kids will have their screen time limit set automatically and will need to enter a passcode to continue watching.

Parents and guardians will be able to use Family Pairing to customize the daily screen time limit for their children.

It will allow them to give different time limits based on the day of the week, allowing families to account for schedules and holidays.

TikTok did not confirm an exact date for the release of the new features, but did confirm that it would be “in the coming weeks.”

Among the new features, teens between the ages of 13 and 15 will automatically have their accounts set to private, meaning users will have to choose what they want to share.

Direct messaging will only be available to those 16 and older, and you must be at least 18 to submit live video.

A screen time dashboard is also being introduced that gives a breakdown of total time spent on the app throughout the day and night.

The new settings will also allow parents to mute app notifications for their teens; Users 13-15 years old will not receive any from 9pm and users 16-17 years old from 10pm

Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s director of trust and safety, said: “Today we’re announcing new features for teens, families and our broader community.

“We believe that digital experiences should bring joy and play a positive role in the way people express themselves, discover ideas and connect.

“We’re improving our Screen Time tool with more personalized options, introducing new default settings for teen accounts, and expanding Family Pairing with more parental controls.”

TikTok executives consulted the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital to choose the limit.

They are also urging teens to set their own daily screen time limit if they opt out of the default value of 60 minutes and spend more than 100 minutes on the app each day.

In a statement, they added that they would send each teen account a weekly inbox notification with a summary of their screen time.
