It is believed that an oil leak caused a fire which then spread to other cars in the area, but this has not yet been confirmed by local police.

In a desperate bid to control the roaring fire, locals scrambled to move broken-down cars to safety.

Trucks and vans honked their horns as oncoming traffic, unaware of the massive destruction and grave danger ahead, approached the tragic accident.
There isn’t much to see close to the fire as a blanket of smoke choked the road as people tried to flee.
Photos posted on social media showed a truck overturned and a bus destroyed by the fire, as long lines formed along the roads.
According to local media, the tragic accident was caused by an oil leak from a car in the Beheira region.
“A horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natroun led to the death of 35 people, at least 18 of whom were burned, and the injuries of 53 others,” Al Ahram said.

Of the injured, 53 are being treated at Wadi El-Natrun Day Surgery Hospital, while seven are being treated at West El Nobaria Central Hospital, according to local new sites.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 12,000 people die in traffic accidents every year.
Thousands suffer non-fatal injuries, and some result in long-term disability.
