Vice President Kamala Harris continues to dodge questions about her political past, even after replacing President Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee.
The ABC News presidential debate could provide voters with more clarity about Harris’ positions on a number of issues, particularly those she openly endorsed during her failed 2020 presidential campaign.
Harris spoke briefly about her changing views during an 18-minute interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, but the interview did not provide much clarity.
When asked about her support for the fracking ban in 2019, Harris indicated her position on the issue had changed.
“Well, let’s be clear. My values haven’t changed,” she said, noting that she believes “we can grow and create a thriving energy economy without banning fracking.”
Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to hold a press conference since replacing President Joe Biden as the nominee
When asked about her position on illegal immigration and border security, Harris repeated a similar series of questions.
“Dana, I think the most important and meaningful aspect of my policy vision and decisions is that my values have not changed,” she said.
With that in mind, here are fourteen of the biggest issues American voters want clarity on:
Vice President Kamala Harris as she participated in the 2020 vice presidential debate
- Were you the “last person in the room” as President Joe Biden prepared to implement his evacuation plan in Afghanistan? And did you raise concerns about his strategy?
- When did you know the truth about President Joe Biden’s physical and mental condition and at what point did you realize he could no longer be president? Are you confident that President Biden can serve out his full term?
- You campaigned against President Donald Trump’s border wall, calling it “medieval” and “a complete waste of taxpayer dollars” and “un-American,” and yet you supported the Senate bill that would resume construction of physical barriers on the southern border. Do you support continuing construction of the border wall and believe the project should be completed?
- Are you still in favor of decriminalizing border crossings?
- You’ve proposed a $25,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers and expanded the child tax credit to as much as $6,000. What stopped you from introducing these proposals during your first term as vice president?
- Do you still support the Senate breaking the filibuster to implement federal abortion rights and voting rights?
- During the 2020 campaign, you promised free college tuition, affordable child care, paid parental leave, and a $15-an-hour national minimum wage. Why have you and Biden failed to enact this agenda despite spending over $4 trillion?
- You spent trillions in your first term, which only made inflation worse. What are you going to do to spend less tax money?
- You have supported the idea that the government would pay reparations to the black American community as atonement for slavery and Jim Crow. What would the Harris version of reparations look like?
- Do you support expanding the Supreme Court? Should there be term limits on Supreme Court justices?
- Would you pardon Hunter Biden?
- Should Americans be allowed to own AR-15s and AK-47s? Do you still support a mandatory gun buyback program?
- Would you consider withdrawing aid to Israel if the organization in Gaza fails to meet humanitarian expectations?
- Do you still support decriminalizing prostitution or are you still concerned about the implications for human trafficking?
- Why did the Biden-Harris administration pressure social media companies to remove content from their platforms? Would you continue that effort if elected president?
