The Crown ‘may be set for limited return focusing on reign of the playboy prince’ following success of Scoop

The Crown could reportedly return as a miniseries or movie after the massive success of the Netflix film Scoop.

The film arrived on the streamer last month and shows Prince Andrew’s infamous Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis and the tension behind the scenes.

Scoop, starring Gillian Anderson and Billie Piper, received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Now it is claimed that the film’s success is being seen as proof that there is still an appetite for stories about the royal family.

The sun reports that executives want to take advantage of this and bring back the hit TV series The Crown.

The period drama only aired its final episodes in December, bringing the infamous show about the British Royal Family to an end.

But Scoop’s success could mean new episodes of The Crown, but in a shortened format, such as a limited series or movie.

A TV insider told The Sun: ‘The consensus was that the royal drama seemed to diminish as it moved closer to modern times, telling multiple stories that so many were familiar with.

“But Scoop showed that instead of doing this in a drawn-out, ten-part series, focusing on one moment in time seemed to engage people.

“If they can repeat that pattern by delivering prequels in a shorter form, they think they may have come up with a winning formula for a new incarnation of The Crown.”

The second half of series six of The Crown explored Prince William and Prince Harry’s grief following the death of Princess Diana, the final years of Princess Margaret’s life, as well as William and Princess Kate’s early romance.

But it is claimed that the reign of King Edward VII would be the focus of the show’s potential return.

Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and the great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II.

Nicknamed Bertie, he reigned from his mother’s death in 1901 until his own death in 1910, at the age of 68 due to health problems caused by his copious smoking.

Edward became embroiled in many scandals throughout his life and had a reputation for his womanizing ways which led to him being called a ‘playboy prince’ and ‘Dirty Bertie’.

He was also a frequent gambler and was once forced to testify in court in 1890 after participating in a card game in which a guest was accused of cheating.

Edward’s only surviving son, George V, appeared in the fifth series of The Crown, played by Richard Dillane as the show explored the Russian Revolution in 1917.

While his grandsons Edward VIII (Alex Jennings) and George VI (Jared Harris) both appeared in the early seasons, with Edward’s abdication leading to George’s reign before Queen Elizabeth II took the throne.
