America’s best burger spot has been revealed.
It’s no surprise that a fast-food giant like McDonald’s doesn’t make the list, but it is a surprise that the winner is neither a dedicated burger joint nor a classic restaurant.
Popular review site Yelp has compiled the top 20 placesfrom Hawaii to New York, for those who fancy a burger.
The list is based on reviews and ratings from Yelp Elites, the most active users known for their quality writing and photos and a passion for local businesses.
Surprisingly, the highest-rated burger in the entire country is a noodle restaurant in Hawaii.

20. District Donuts Sliders Brew, New Orleans
District Donuts Sliders Brew offers sliders and burgers made from 100 percent Black Angus beef.
Located in the heart of the city’s uptown area, fans often rave about the hickory bacon cheeseburger with candied jalapeños, bacon, cold queso and hickory sauce.
19. Santa Fe Bite, Sante Fe
Located on the historic Old Santa Fe Trail, Santa Fe Bite serves a beloved green chile cheeseburger.
‘The burger patties are also huge and give that home-made nostalgic feeling. If you’re really hungry, check out ‘The Big Bite,’ a whopping 15 oz burger,” Yelp said of the selection.
18. Unconventional Dinner, Washington DC
According to the Elites, the capital’s favorite burger combines soulful comfort with haute technology.
Designed by Chef David Deshaies, the Unovonventional Diner’s double cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, pickles, American cheese and a sesame seed bun topped with their signature “Sexy Sauce” has become a hit.
17. Nick’s Old Fashioned Hamburger House, Lexington
Elites have named ‘The Noah’ burger at Nick’s Old Fashioned Hamburger House in North Carolina as one of the tastiest in the country.
‘The Noah’ contains chili pepper, bacon, jalapeño, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise and onions.
16. Pappas Burger, Houston
“A classic 1950s-style diner meets an energetic, fun sports bar,” in the heart of Houston, Texas, was also on the list.
The burgers, which have been serving for more than two decades, are 12 ounces of freshly ground, Texas-sized prime beef served with American cheese and topped with bacon jam, pimento cheese and grilled onions with an over-easy egg on a challah bun.
15. Sparky’s Burgers, BBQ & Espresso, Hatch
Sparky’s Burgers in New Mexico is a must-stop for road trippers, as the roadside location not only offers delicious food, but also live music.
Spark’y Green Chile Double Cheeseburger is big enough to share and is so popular that there is often a line out the door.
14. Mr. Juicy, San Antonio
Another entry for Texas is Mr Juicy, known for its bright green and red building.
Mr Juicy specializes in thick shakes, crispy fries and burgers made with generous layers of cheese.
13. Le Diplomate, Washington DC
Le Diplomate combines the American hamburger joint with French café culture and produces the popular “Burger Américain”.
“The size and extra touches – like the little American flag in the bun – make this a great stop for any burger fan,” says Yelp.
12. Pastis, New York
Pastis in Manhattan offers a “Cheeseburger à l’Américaine” on the lunch or dinner menu that Elites can’t get enough of.
It consists of two beef patties, a generous helping of American cheese, lettuce and pickles.
11. Kopp’s Frozen Custard, Glendale
Kopp’s in Glendale, Wisconsin makes the coveted list because of its reputation as the Milwaukee area’s go-to burger and custard joint.
Elites can agree with that, because they can’t get enough of their citizens.
Their popular “KRK Burger” is topped with ketchup, mayo, fried onion, cheese, bacon, more cheese, tomato, raw onion, even more cheese, pickles, spicy mayo on a toasted bun.
10. Green Dot Stables, Detroit
Green Dot Stables in Detroit, Michigan is a harness racing themed slider.
It offers more than 20 types of sliders, including a regular cheeseburger slider and a Korean slider with kimchi and peanut butter, a favorite with Elite reviewers.
9. Empamamas, Tampa
“This place is known for their empanadas and is also home to a cheeseburger gem,” Yep says of Empamas in Tampa, Florida.
The “Cheeseburger in Paradise” joints include seasoned ground beef, cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, spinach, tomato, red onion, pickle and their signature Tampa Girl sauce.
8. Satu’li Canteen, Lake Buena Vista
Also in Florida is Satu’li Canteen in Lake Buena Vista. The restaurant is perfect for families because it is located in Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
The “Cheeseburger Steam Pods” are bao buns filled with ground beef, ketchup, mustard, pickle and cheddar cheese and are highly recommended.
7. North-South Grill, Pembroke Pines
Yet another Florida entry is the highly recommended North South Grill in Pembroke Pines.
North South Grill uses 100 percent American Wagyu beef in their large portion burgers.
6. HiHo Cheeseburger, Santa Monica
In California, HiHo’s cheeseburgers are beloved by Yelpers for their 100 percent grass-fed Wagyu beef, served with American cheese and ketchup, all on a bun.
“This is a great place to sample a great cheeseburger with an emphasis on clean food,” Yelp writes.
5. Bunz, Huntington Beach
Another highly recommended burger joint in the Golden State is Bunz in Huntingdon Beach.
Bunzburgers are made to taste, with whatever toppings you want. They also offer some off-the-beaten-track items, like a pastrami burger.
4. Charles Prime Rib, New York
On the East Coast, Charles Prime Rib in New York’s West Village is a charming supper club open late into the night.
‘This burger is perfect served medium with thick-cut bacon and an egg. This burger offers an upscale presentation while staying true to its roots as an American classic,” according to Yelp.
3. The Friendly, San Diego
In the top three is The Friendly from San Diego. The famous burger restaurant offers a tasty smash burger with a variety of toppings and styles.
Their signature “Dirty Flat-top Burger” features two great patties with cheese and grilled onions, all between a soft soft bun, according to Yelp.
2. Au Cheval, Chicago
Chicago’s Au Cheval is a diner-style bar and restaurant that ranks second, with its favorite, no-frills, signature burger.
The cheeseburger comes with two meat patties and thick cut peppery bacon, there is also the option to add an egg.
1. Shige’s Saimin Stand, Wahiawa
The highest-rated burger in the entire country comes from a noodle restaurant in Wahiawa, Hawaii.
“This quiet spot in Hawaii is in the spotlight for their burger that some Yelpers claim is the best burger in the world,” the website wrote about the selection.
Shige’s is a family business and has been in business for over twenty years.
It’s best known in the area for its fried saimin, but the homemade cheeseburger is the one that takes the cake.
