The stunning impeachment charges against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sparked a process that would see him temporarily removed from office following a successful vote in the House β and where his Senate wife Angela could rule amid tasteless charges related to an affair.
On Thursday, a Republican-led committee issued a recommendation to impeach the embattled AG after years of investigations and allegations. He was indicted in 2015 on charges of securities fraud, but has not stood trial.
One charge involves bribery allegations involving real estate developer and Paxton donor Nate Paul. Paul is accused of giving a job to the woman Paxton had an affair with in exchange for legal counsel.
Paxton told staffers about the 2018 affair, the Associated Press reported in November 2020, days before Paxton would help lead a legal effort to help former President Donald Trump overturn the election results. A group of aides who accused Paxton of corruption were fired and subsequently received $3.3 million in taxpayers’ money in a settlement.

Should the Republican-dominated House vote to remove him, Paxton would be temporarily removed from office before his Senate trial, where his wife, Senator Angela Paxton, will have to decide whether to participate in the proceedings.
The former math teacher was elected in 2018 and sided with Paxton when he spoke at Trump’s “Save America” ββrally outside the White House on Jan. 6, 2020.
She could decide to go back on the decision β it would be only the third official to be impeached in Texas in 200 years β or the Senate could make a decision on how to handle such matters, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The Justice Department opened its own investigation in February after a group of Paxton employees filed allegations with the FBI.
The five-member House panel, made up of three Republicans and two Democrats, recommended 20 articles of impeachment.
The state House is strongly Republican, with the 149-member chamber split 85-64 β but Paxton is at war with the state’s GOP leadership.
Paxton has attacked the GOP House’s “liberal leadership,” saying they have “shown nothing but contempt for the traditional values ββof conservative Texas.”
He also attacked the “liberal” Speaker of the Republican House, David Phelan, and demanded his resignation accused him of being drunk during a marathon session last Friday.
Phelan’s office dismissed the accusation as Paxton tried to “save face.”
By hiring him, “the RINOs in the Texas Legislature are now on the same side as Joe Biden,” Paxton said.
The state senate, which is controlled by Republicans 19-12, would hold Paxton’s impeachment trial.
The developer, Paul, denies allegations against him and is involved in his own legal story. He was ordered captivity in March, ager lost an appeal in a legal battle with a non-profit organization.
