Thomas Tuchel had tears in his eyes as he charged into the officials with another blast after Bayern Munich were controversially denied a potential late equalizer against Real Madrid.

The Bundesliga giants exited the Champions League on Wednesday evening as Los Blancos booked their place in next month’s final at Wembley with a 4-3 aggregate victory after two late goals from former Stoke striker Joselu.

That wasn’t the last of the drama, however, as Matthijs de Ligt scored in the 13th minute of stoppage time, which would have sent the match into extra time, only for Polish referee Szymon Marciniak to have blown the whistle for offside just before the match. ball hit the back of the net.

He added: ‘Imagine Real Madrid letting them keep running when they score their second goal. It would have been the same, the ball goes to Toni and the whistle blows. Speaking to TNT Sports, Tuchel revealed that the assistant referee had apologized to him for flagging early in the match for a move that could have cost his team the match.

Tuchel was visibly emotional during his post-match interview with DAZN on Wednesday evening

He said: ‘We were almost there and a very unusual mistake from the best player (Manuel Neuer) for the equalizer, after which we had to concede a very close decision in stoppage time.

‘Then we scored one and it was a disastrous decision by the linesman and the referee, so in the end it almost feels like a betrayal by that decision.

The referee too, he doesn’t have to whistle, he sees us winning the second ball, he sees us getting the shot away. Whistling is a very, very bad decision.

‘It’s against the rules and it’s a bad decision by both of them. It’s a disaster, hard to swallow, but it is what it is.’

Matthijs de Ligt had led Bayern’s on-pitch protests and echoed his manager’s comments after the match by also receiving an apology from the referees.
